Is my septic tank full ?
We have included in this section a simple diagram of a basic septic tank. This shows that the level inside the tank is set by the outlet to the effluent field. Typically this can be 300mm - 400mm below the tank lid.
So if the tank looks full, and the scum level is getting close to the lid, its time for a clean. What cloggs up a tank is the depth of the scum and sludge. The tank needs cleaning before the scum / sludge gets to a depth that it blocks the outlet. A common length of time between cleaning out septic tanks is about 3 years.
How often should I clean out my septic tank?
This depends on a number of factors, size of your tank, what is going into the system and the number of people living at the property. General rule is for three to four people your tank should be cleaned every three years.
How long will it take to clean my tank?
It will take about 45 minutes to complete a tank clean, if everything is straightforward.
